This is a short piece on a project that should feel more rich than the billion dollar price tag. The Portland International Airport is a feat of modern archetectural, engineering and material ingenuity. However one of the simplest details, I believe, has made what could be a wine tasting/cigar lounge vibe, the lighting.
Walking into PDX through arrivals or departures, you get the sense that a lot went into the the 40+ foot tall mass timber roof above. ZGF Archetecture has indeed put the Pacific Northwest airport on the map. However, in their website photos and review images across the website, there is a significant difference between actual lighting & photo shopped references. As an individual who chose a life outside the laboratory, the pale choice of lighting supporting the skylights, brings down the walk through experience by a couple points.
Yes there are likely some considerations for the biosphere support specific to the plant friendly wavelengths, but a preference of mine strolling through a billion dollar mass timber project, are warm cigar lounge vibe lighting. Otherwise, beautiful project ZGF.
